This wry comedy takes an affectionate look at the ‘dregs’ of Finnish society, in the manner of a ‘50s B-movie. With plenty of low-life humour and a beautiful palate of primary colours, this is one of Kaurismäki’s most accessible and satisfying films to date, picking up the Grand Prix and Best Actress award in Cannes earlier this year.

A man (Markku Peltola) arrives in Helsinki to start a new job, and almost immediately gets mugged. Coming round in hospital swathed in bandages, he can’t even remember his name, and finds that whatever he did in his previous life, his status in society is now that of an insect. No name, no job, no address. Instead of going mad, the man treats this as an opportunity for a fresh start and finds himself a makeshift home in a storage container on the docks. In these unpromising circumstances, he finds many others like him scraping by and making the best of life, always happy to share a bit of broth or some vodka. Queuing at the Salvation Army, he meets a woman called Irma (Kati Outinen), and a ramshackle folk band who he offers to manage. Then, just as he is starting to rebuild his life, his past catches up with him…
