Olof Palme: Loved and Hated
05 september, Radio Sweden
"His brilliance was also a problem"
Thirty years after he was shot to death on the streets of Stockholm, Olof Palme is still making headlines in Sweden today.
"Our idea to make this film is to make him visual, to show him to the young generation that grew up with the murder..."
Olof Palme was openly shot to death on a February evening 1986 on the streets of Stockholm. In one night, the country of Sweden was transfigured. “PALME” is about his life, his time, and about the Sweden he had created. About a man who altered history.
But instead of new theories or conspiracies regarding the former prime minister's still unsolved murder, an upcoming documentary film looks back at the controversial life of the politician and family man, and aims to solve the question -- "Who was Olof Palme?" and why did he draw such strong adverse opinions?
The film, with the help of the late prime minister's surving family, aims to find out why a man born into the upper classes of Swedish society became a Social Democrat and why his reign as prime minister from 1969 to 1986 attracted both hero worship and hatred.
"Our idea to make this film is to make him visual, to show him to the young generation that grew up with the murder," the two directors told Radio Sweden.
"He had a very special personality, he was so intense, so brilliant but his brilliancy was a problem for him as well because many people got hurt by his harsh words."
